I see what looks like an army of tiny critters marching on the stems of my plants. My “control” is to blast them off with the hose. What are they and is my hose treatment the right one?

Blasting them off with water is actually a good way to start and may work. If not, try an insecticidal soap or horticultural oil. read the directions on the product and follow carefully. Organic controls like pyrethrum (made from mum flowers!) can also be effective. Many beneficial insects love aphids so don’t use any broad spectrum insecticide or your kill off the friends.

It might be aphids. If so, insecticidal soap or neem oil may work. As greenqueen said, lady bugs love them, too! :)

How are your plants now? It is very important to monitor out tomato plants to make sure plant grows healthy and pests free. Homemade sprays like a mixture of garlic and chili are also beneficial in dealing with bugs, white fly, beetles or aphids. In case of really bad infestation, it is always better to consult pest exterminator to use the proper chemicals which may also do not cause any harm to our tomato plantations.
